AmeriVault, a provider of online backup and related managed services, has announced the availability of an advanced hardware-free hosted disaster recovery service for IBM i servers that allows remote access to a virtualized recovery environment.
A cornerstone of disaster recovery planning is to ensure that backup data is stored securely offsite, geographically separated from the primary systems, should a regional disaster strike, such as a hurricane. AmeriVault's new Virtual Disaster Recovery service for iSeries servers, RestartIT-VDR for iSeries, provides an offsite fail-over site so administrators and end users can remotely access AmeriVault's managed, virtualized recovery environment while the primary site is being rebuilt.
When a server houses mission-critical data, three, four, or more days--as might be the case when using backup tapes archived in offsite storage--is just too long a waiting period for most businesses. RestartIT-VDR for iSeries is an advanced recovery service that allows IBM i, iSeries, and AS/400 server recovery within a day, the company says. RestartIT-VDR for iSeries allows clients to remotely access AmeriVault's virtualized iSeries environment for up to 30 days following the declaration of a disaster--for no additional charge--providing time for a company to rebuild its primary systems following a disaster.
The foundation of RestartIT-VDR for iSeries consists of online backup and virtualized standby recovery servers hosted at one of AmeriVault's secure, world-class datacenters. Should a client encounter an outage or suffer a disaster, rapid recovery commences: the backup data is recovered to AmeriVault's standby iSeries server--all achieved remotely for the client. With iSeries' excellent compression and with Gig-E connectivity in AmeriVault's datacenters, the recovery process to AmeriVault's recovery servers can take just a few hours. Users can then VPN-in to resume operations while the primary systems are rebuilt. Full recovery is typically achieved in 10 hours or less.
Test Your Disaster Recovery Service
Unlike many disaster recovery plans that lack true testability, or are not completely practical when a real disaster occurs, RestartIT-VDR for iSeries is a testable disaster recovery service. After helping several clients recover from 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, AmeriVault realized that IT professionals--not just the businesses for which they work--needed a better solution. Protecting data safe distances offsite is the best practice--but when a real disaster strikes, it is just not feasible to ask an administrator to leave his or her family to begin recovery at the remote site. The practicality of their disaster recovery solution, then, goes right out the window.
RestartIT-VDR for iSeries not only provides remote recovery so administrators can stay with their families during a disaster, but it is also a fully testable solution. With annual testing included with the service, RestartIT-VDR for iSeries provides advanced, cost-effective disaster recovery readiness for iSeries servers. Here are several features and benefits:
• Virtual, warm recovery servers
• Rapid, economical recovery
• No capital expense for recovery servers
• Remote recovery initialization capability
• Skip time-consuming travel time to datacenter for recovery
• Have remote access to virtual recovery environment following disaster
• Use world-class datacenters

AmeriVault Partners with EMC
In July, AmeriVault and EMC Corp., a leader in information infrastructure solutions, announced a joint agreement to deliver a new online data backup solution, branded AmeriVault-EZ. The service represents one of three online backup segments provided by AmeriVault that can be tailored to a customer's data protection needs with regard to compliance, redundancies, recovery objectives, and price points.
The new AmeriVault-EZ service is based on EMC's industry-leading Mozy online backup for businesses and consumers. Available immediately, AmeriVault-EZ provides cost-effective, automated backup and offsite protection to organizations seeking to protect data residing on MS Windows--based desktops, laptops, and file servers. This service will complement AmeriVault's redundant, full-featured backup solutions, and enable an economical option for larger enterprises, the company said.
"In our search for a technology foundation that could power AmeriVault-EZ with an affordable price structure, we found EMC's Mozy to be the perfect fit," said Bud Stoddard, president of AmeriVault. "We needed to extend our service offerings beyond server backup to desktops and laptops, and Mozy was the clear choice given their expertise in desktop and laptop online backup services. Besides, having installed more than 250 terabytes of EMC enterprise storage over the years, we have experienced EMC's world-class reputation for reliability first-hand."
This year, AmeriVault received an unprecedented number of requests to provide an online backup service for desktops and laptops. Companies now want to protect more than just their servers, and, after evaluating the options in the industry, AmeriVault chose Mozy because the company's award-winning backup solution will enable AmeriVault to expand into new industry verticals. Mozy specializes in providing simple, automatic, and secure online backup to consumers and businesses. Fortune 500 companies and small businesses select Mozy and its partners to back up their laptops, desktops, and small office servers because of its affordability and ease of use, the company said.
"We have been searching for partners to further drive the Mozy channel distribution, and given AmeriVault's outstanding reputation in the industry, we were delighted to reach a partnership," said Vance Checketts, chief operating officer at Mozy. AmeriVault has an amazing ability to bring together companies that otherwise would be competitors, and we're confident this combined offer will help organizations protect areas that otherwise would be left vulnerable."
