RJS Software Systems has announced a technology seminar and face-off for developers who want to learn to use Java and .NET programming tools to build Windows and Web applications for the IBM System i.
The two-day event, called the Java/.NET Face-Off, will take place Sept. 18-19 in Chicago at IBM's downtown Innovation Center and will feature industry expert Joe Pluta of Pluta Brothers Design and RJS President and CTO Richard Schoen.
The Face-Off is designed to give System i developers the opportunity to compare Java and .NET development approaches in a fun and interactive educational environment. The first day will be hosted by Pluta, a longtime Java advocate and supporter of the IBM path of Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) and Rational Developer for i SOA (RDi-SOA). The second day will be hosted by Schoen, a strong proponent of Microsoft's .NET technology.
"Joe and I are on opposite sides of the technology fence most of the time," says Schoen, "so we thought this would be a fun forum to share our insights on .NET and Java development."
Both speakers will introduce their preferred tool sets and then guide attendees through a variety of hands-on development exercises culminating in the creation of basic Web and Windows applications. The event will end with a panel discussion and debate between Pluta and Schoen about the pros and cons of each development approach.
"I want people to learn in-depth what the two architectures are and which will work best in their environments," Pluta says. "I think Richard and I have large enough egos that we'll both want to prove our architecture is better, but in the long run, it really depends on the shop and its business requirements, skill sets, and budget. The best thing is for attendees to get knowledge, not for either of us to 'win,'" says Pluta.
While the Face-Off is scheduled to be a one-time event, Pluta and Schoen see ample opportunity for future classes, particularly as IBM System i shops continue to look for future ways to modernize and leverage their IT investments.
