Attendees will update skills and do their part to keep the IBM i relevant.
Following two successful Summit events in 2010, System i Developer has announced that registration is now open for the next RPG & DB2 Summit, which will take place March 22-24, 2011 at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center in Orlando. Developed exclusively for RPG developers and DB2 engineers, the Summit curriculum teaches attendees how to exploit IBM i capabilities to meet new business needs and evolve the role of the platform within their organization.
According to Summit organizers Susan Gantner, Jon Paris, Paul Tuohy and Skip Marchesani, the innate efficiency of RPG/DB2 development has camouflaged the true urgency to learn and use new skills, creating an opening for developers on other platforms to snap up the more innovative projects. Similarly, data can leak off of the IBM i platform under the auspices of making it more accessible to users. Those trends, in conjunction with lingering 5250 interfaces, can erroneously pigeon-hole the IBM i as closed and outdated technology.
"One trend we've noticed is that more teams are actively defending the use of the IBM i within their organizations. Our goal is to send every attendee back to work armed with new skills so they can get any job done efficiently. That’s what makes a person a compelling and credible emissary for the platform,” says Skip Marchesani, partner at System i Developer. “The very best way to keep the IBM i in the forefront in the first place is to get serious about learning and using the functionality that the box gives you, before your business absolutely needs it.”
The RPG & DB2 Summit curriculum features four tracks of sessions devoted to critical topics such as IBM i modernization techniques; application architecture, coding and database best practices; and new technologies that are being successfully used in IBM i development.
In addition, four optional half-day seminars on Monday, March 21 allow attendees to kick start their education on two of the Summit’s most popular topics —moving RPG applications to the Web, and leveraging SQL. Specific Headstart Seminars include:
- HTML/Javascript/CSS for RPG Developers with Paul Tuohy
- Almost Everything You Need to Know About SQL with Skip Marchesani
- Web Services for RPGers with Scott Klement
- The Easy Way to High Performance SQL on DB2 for i with Mike Cain
To make the Summit accessible for most professionals, System i Developer works to keep registration and hotel rates as affordable as possible. Conference registration is just $1,095 through February 11, 2011. One seminar can be added at just $215, or two seminars for $295. Seminar rates include lunch, and the conference rate includes at least two meals per day. Rooms at the Florida Hotel are $114 per night (including in-room Internet) through February 25. Registration and rates can be found at www.systemideveloper.com/registration.html.
