New “Open Source Squad” helps with installation, setup, Q&A
System i Developer today announces several enhancements to the core curriculum for the next RPG & DB2 Summit, October 2-4, 2018 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Illinois. Sitting alongside more traditional topics such as RPG, ILE and RDi, the new content and activities will help attendees further improve personal productivity and speed the adoption of newer technologies on IBM i, especially in the areas of open source, SQL and Db2 for i capabilities.
Several new open source sessions will be offered. Topics include mobilizing RPG with Phonegap; getting started with Yum; understanding Git; and a web language “shoot out” that will compare and contrast the open source languages commonly used for web-related development and the role of RPG alongside them. The new open source topics supplement content on PHP, node.js, HTTPAPI, YAJL, and more—including an 8-hour Python workshop.
The October Summit will also feature a new Open Source Squad led by Liam Allan. Squad members will be available during the conference to help attendees install, set up, and get started with common open source solutions. Members will also be available to answer attendees’ questions and participate in an Open Source Roundtable discussion on October 3.
“It’s exciting to see open source gaining momentum on the IBM i,” says Jon Paris, founding partner of System i Developer. “Even avid RPGers like me can appreciate the importance of its role in our future. We’re always look for ways to make open source more accessible to traditional IBM i developers, so we jumped at the chance to host the Open Source Squad.”
In addition to new open source content, several new sessions related to SQL and Db2 for i functionality will be offered. Updates to the Db2 track are currently underway and are expected to be announced in the next month.
“There are so many ways to leverage IBM i data and transform decades-old business logic into modern applications,” says Paris, “but RPG, SQL and open source will most certainly be at the center of it all.
“As we celebrate IBM i’s 30th anniversary year, it’s a testament to the system’s flexibility, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness that reuse almost always makes more sense than replacement.”
Online registration for the RPG & DB2 Summit can be accessed via the System i Developer website. The early bird registration rate of $1,295 is in effect through August 17, 2018. RPG & DB2 Summit alumni and their colleagues receive a $100 discount when they register using their alumni ID.
