PHP developers to have out-of-the box access to MongoDB as Zend bundles the database driver for PHP with Zend Server 5.5.
10gen, the company behind MongoDB, and Zend Technologies announced at ZendCon this week that they have integrated the MongoDB PHP driver with Zend Server, the world’s leading PHP Web application server, enabling PHP developers to take advantage of the agility and scalability of MongoDB.
Zend Technologies is now bundling the MongoDB PHP driver with Zend Server 5.5 to provide PHP developers with out-of-the-box access to MongoDB. In the future, the companies plan to provide support for MongoDB on the Zend Application Fabric, also announced at the conference, an open, elastic platform that offers everything required to successfully run and scale business-critical PHP applications on public and private cloud infrastructures.
The combination of MongoDB with the Zend PHP architecture, powered by Zend Server, will result in a faster on-ramp to cloud deployment, while retaining control of the architecture and preserving the freedom to choose among target cloud resource pools. 10gen also partners with Red Hat, VMware and Amazon Web Services to ensure customers have the best possible experience using and administering MongoDB in OpenShift, Cloud Foundry and EC2 cloud production environments.
“As Zend continues to develop the technology roadmap for phpcloud.com, we will be looking at support for a number of emerging technologies, and MongoDB is an obvious choice,” said Andi Gutmans, CEO of Zend Technologies. “The combination of Zend Server and MongoDB is powerful, offering developers a complete platform for PHP Web application development and delivery and a quick path to internet scalability with a proven data store that can keep pace with peak loads and unpredictable storage loads.”
“PHP is ideal for agile development and allows developers to code much faster. As someone who still writes lines of code for MongoDB, I am always looking for opportunities to interact with developers and engage with the community," said Dwight Merriman, CEO and co-founder of 10gen.
"ZendCon brings together a growing ecosystem of PHP developers all eager to explore new technologies and build next-generation solutions. The partnership between 10gen and Zend Technologies continues to grow, and we look forward to more opportunities to collaborate in the near future," Merriman said.
MongoDB has become the leading NoSQL database, combining scalability, performance and ease of use with traditional relational database features such as dynamic queries and indexes. 10gen recently announced $20 million in financing from existing investors Flybridge Capital, Sequoia Capital, and Union Square Ventures, which will be used to address the growing global demand for MongoDB across enterprises. Customers including Disney, Ericsson, Viacom, and Telefonica already benefit from MongoDB’s support for big data and cloud platforms, as well as the ability to develop projects iteratively. Common use cases for MongoDB include building operational data stores for websites and online games, content management solutions, real-time stats and analytics, archiving, and event logging.
In a keynote address at ZendCon, 10gen's Merriman discussed his history with NoSQL databases in a presentation titled: NoSQL: "How Serving 400,000 Ads a Second Inspired the Creation of Mongo." Merriman’s speech highlighted his personal struggle as CTO of DoubleClick to locate a database capable of supporting 400,000 ads served every second. His firsthand experience led him to create custom databases and determine the need for similar applications that could not fit in the traditional database architecture, resulting in the first lines of MongoDB code. Merriman also addressed the complexities of Internet infrastructure scaling and the history and philosophy of NoSQL.
