Written by Thomas Snyder, one of the industry's most influential authors, the book is designed to help programmers take advantage of the latest technologies from within RPG.
Advanced, Integrated RPG, the much anticipated advanced-level RPG programming book written by Thomas Snyder, has been released for sale and is now available from the MC Press Bookstore (www.mc-store.com). Snyder, a senior programmer/analyst worked closely with MC Press to create a book designed for programmers to take advantage of the latest technologies from within existing RPG applications. After receiving numerous requests from the IBM community for an advanced-level RPG book, MC Press–in conjunction with Snyder—arrived at Advanced, Integrated RPG, a book that is already being met with enthusiastic response by businesses running IBM Power Systems.
“Advanced, Integrated RPG shows you how to take advantage of the latest technologies from within existing applications,” says Snyder. “This book gives you the tools to break through these obstacles and use common development tools to share information and provide more compatible interfaces.”
Snyder has been developing RPG applications since 1997. He is also a Sun-certified Java programmer and has been working with Java since 2000. Prior to working as a programmer/analyst, he worked at Intel as a hardware engineer. Snyder has done substantial modernization programming in RPG and has integrated RPG with other technologies, such as Java and Qshell, making it possible for applications to implement newer capabilities.
Advanced, Integrated RPG comprises 386 pages covering 14 in-depth chapters on topics from working with Java to interfacing with Excel and distributing PDF formatted documents. Beginning chapters focus on modernized technique available in RPG ILE, including free-format coding, modular coding with prototyping, and activation groups. The book introduces the basics of the Java programming language and RPG integration with Java, providing the building blocks for the rest of the chapters and allowing the reader to take advantage of all Java resources available through RPG.
With Advanced, Integrated RPG, readers can:
- Update OPM RPG techniques while taking advantage of what ILE has to offer
- Get an introduction to the Java programming language and learn how to exploit it from within RPG
- Gain exposure to open-source technologies and how to make them accessible to RPG
- Learn how to migrate existing green-bar reports into Excel spreadsheets and PDFs
- Discover how to automatically email reports using RPG and JavaMail
“Most RPG modernization books focus on the front-end or cover syntax and encapsulation, but they don’t leverage these capabilities to provide new function,” Snyder says. “This book focuses on the back-end by updating your reporting from green-bar reports that are physically distributed as electronic documents distributed by email.”
Advanced, Integrated RPG currently is on sale in the MC Press Bookstore with introductory pricing. Visit the MC Press Bookstore to purchase the book or learn more about it from detailed information, including the full table of contents and sample excerpt.
