Release 9.1 delivers many user-requested enhancements including greater automation, enhanced spooled file replication, advanced replication error handling, and a new bandwidth estimator.

Bug Busters Software Engineering has announced Release 9.1 of its RSF and RSF-HA applications for the IBM i.

The base version of RSF provides an advanced managed file transfer layer for the IBM i. RSF-HA is a complete high availability and data replication solution for the IBM i platform bringing users more power at less cost than the competition, the company says. Release 9.1 updates both the base and HA versions of RSF.

Release 9.1 delivers many user-requested enhancements including greater automation, enhanced spooled file replication, advanced replication error handling and a new bandwidth estimator.

Automation

Several RSF commands have been changed to allow you to run them on machine A, but have them affect machine B. In a replication environment, this means that commands can be run on the production machine to perform tasks on the backup machine. This makes it easier to control more tasks from a central location. Cross-system enabled functions include library and directory cleanup, journal management, replication management, log maintenance and more.

A new tool is also provided to help you manage recurring RSF tasks.  As shipped, all recommended RSF tasks are included, but you can easily add, change and delete tasks as required.  Selected tasks are scheduled using the system job scheduler.

Superior Spooled File Replication

Replication of spooled files is now more thorough, more flexible and better integrated with library replication. When replicating a library, you can now specify whether to replicate spooled files on output queues within the library. Filtering options make it easy to replicate subsets of output queues and spooled files. All spooled file create, delete and move operations are replicated for the selected output queues.

Advanced Error Handling

In a perfect world, there would be no replication errors.  When they do occur, it is often due to an unexpected job or other conditions on the target machine that are interfering with replication. RSF-HA recovers from these types of errors automatically.  However, eliminating replication errors at their source can save time and machine resources.  Several new enhancements help keep replication errors to a minimum.

New logging options let you capture as much information as needed to diagnose and prevent errors.  You can now direct RSF to report any of the following when a replication error is detected:

  • Overview information, giving the overall circumstances, cause and context for the error
  • Lock details listing any library, object, member or record locks which could have contributed to the problem
  • Constraint and trigger changes which may have contributed to the problem
  • A list of changes made to the object in question by some job or user outside the replication process
  • A job log showing any system messages sent around the time of the error

One common cause of replication errors is locks due to save operations on the target machine.  New settings let you avoid these problems by directing RSF-HA to wait and retry a failed operation when the locked object becomes available.  You can specify the number of retries and the number of seconds to delay between each attempt.

Some replication changes affect the contents of and object; others do not.  Record adds, changes and deletes, for example, clearly affect the object contents, but changes to the object's attributes or authorities do not.  New options let you handle errors for data and non-data changes differently, resulting in faster, more efficient error correction.

Bandwidth Estimator

Whether implementing full-blown high availability, or simply sending objects and data between machines on an ad hoc basis, adequately sizing the connection between your machines is essential to achieving favorable results.  New RSF tools make estimating your bandwidth requirements easy.  Using your existing database files, your existing journals, or both, RSF determines the bandwidth required to move the necessary data from point A to point B, showing a breakdown in megabits/second that would be required for each hour of the reporting period.

  • Enhanced journal lag reporting
  • Enhanced integrity checking
  • Easier replication start-up
  • Easily control the user profile under which replication jobs run
  • New journal management tools

Complete Solution

RSF 9.1 Base Version makes inter-system communication, file transfer and object distribution a snap.

  • Send and retrieve objects and spooled files securely
  • Send email and text messages from any program or command line. Attach objects and spooled files to email messages with ease
  • Pass through to other machines securely and easily
  • Send objects to many machines in the time it takes to send to just one
  • Industry standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption supported
  • Change the layout of a physical file while it's in use.

RSF-HA 9.1 includes all of the base version function and allows you to replicate everything on your system in real time:

  • Libraries
  • IFS directories
  • User profiles
  • System values
  • Network attributes
  • Authorization lists
  • Configuration information
  • Data queues
  • Object-level authorities
  • Spooled files
  • Message queues
  • Data areas
  • And more...

Full high availability and role swap is supported.
