In a pioneering effort, the ISV has created an automated build environment for EGL projects.

Remain Software, a developer of software change management solutions for the IBM midrange market, has announced that it has created an automated build environment for the building, testing, and deployment of EGL web services. TD/OMS-EGL Continuous Integration for Java instantly creates an environment for EGL projects by running EGL automated builds from within a builder server such as Continuum or Hudson. With Remain's Continuous Integration for Java in place, code and integration tests can be put to effective use enhancing the overall software quality and reducing the risk of distributing faulty software, according to the company.*

The automated build environment automatically checks out the EGL web service and related projects from a version control system's source repository. Then the following steps are performed:

  • Generates Java or Java Script from EGL sources
  • Packages the EGL-generated resources into an exclusive allow read (EAR )
  • Deploys the EAR to a local WebSphere Application Server (WAS)
  • Runs integration test against the deployed EAR
  • Pushes the web-service EAR into a software change management system, like Remain Software’s TD/OMS, for further processing

Once in TD/OMS, the Web-service EAR and related components, such as RPG programs and SQL files are processed and distributed to target systems, whereby the web-service EAR can be deployed directly into a WebSphere Application Server alleviating the tedious manual handling often required for a WAS EAR deployment.

Benefits

  • Reduces the time normally required to release web service applications
  • Relies on the EGL automated build environment to construct the EGL web-services and to run the essential test suites automatically
  • Reduces the risk of distributing faulty software
  • Pulls EGL into a more Agile development process

Solutions First LLC New Remain Distributor

Meanwhile, in other news, Remain Software and Solutions First, LLC have announced that Solutions First of Southern California has been named a Remain distributor for North America.

Remain and Solutions First, LLC, a provider of solutions for IT infrastructure, announced a strategic association to distribute Remain’s TD/OMS Software Change Management suite in the U.S. and Canada.

"TD/OMS is a very robust solution for software change management with an impressive reference list of existing customers," said Joan McKittrick, Solutions First, LLC. "Remain Software is a company dedicated to and specializing in software change management for nearly 20 years. The roadmap of TD/OMS includes a platform-independent product which is of great benefit to enterprises that use different platforms in a hybrid environment," she said.

Marco Kok, Remain Software general manager, said he is looking forward to working with Solutions First in the U.S. and Canadian markets. “Solutions First, LLC has a lot of experience with software change management (SCM). This is a great benefit for customers, in the U.S. and Canada, who can be assured that they are in contact with a company that knows exactly what SCM is all about.”

Remain Software has been developing change management software solutions for the IBM midrange platform since 1992. TD/OMS controls the entire software change process from the IBM System i platform, where the product’s repository resides. Software changes can be tracked from incident to fix, through test, acceptance, and distribution to the production environment. It handles validation, user sign-off, and documentation of software changes.

*A continuous integration (CI) engine is an automated build system that checks out the most current code from the source code repository, builds it, and makes the resulting artifacts available for download and/or review. It is also a way to see if the entire system is actually compilable.
