A new solution from Midrange Dynamics substantially reduces business application downtime and risk when deploying database changes across the enterprise.

MDRapid, the latest product from Midrange Dynamics, uses high availability technology in conjunction with change management techniques to update IBM i database files with minimal interruption to operations.

“MDCMS and MDRapid take advantage of the control and auditing inherent with change management. They work together to manage database updates and deploy all associated application objects with extreme efficiency,” says Midrange Dynamics Managing Director Michael Morgan.

Overcome Modernization Obstacles

Companies are aware of the benefits of converting DDS-described physical files to DDL SQL tables. However, real-life challenges to accomplishing modernization goals are formidable. Critical applications often have short downtime windows so it’s difficult for organizations to tackle essential projects like application and database modernization without disrupting systems that support vital business operations.

Typically when a file structure is modified, users lose access to one or more applications while the change is implemented. Issues arise when the data copy or conversion can’t fit into an available downtime window due to file size. The need to quickly and securely deploy changes to high-volume files on multiple servers compounds this challenge.

MDRapid employs MIMIX Promoter® from Vision Solutions to migrate data to new file formats while the application is in use. Any changes made to the current version of the files are journaled and synced with the new version held in the staged library. Thanks to a low performance footprint, users are not impacted during this process.

“Since it deploys database changes quickly, even for multi-million- and multi-billion-record files that have an extensive amount of update activity, it’s easy to integrate MDRapid into day-to-day operations,” say Mr. Morgan. “It’s helpful long-term for any type of database change. Another major benefit of using MDRapid is that your business is protected from risk. If anything goes wrong, you can roll back to your old production data.”

“We see a tremendous opportunity to assist organizations who want to modernize their traditional databases, but are apprehensive about impacts on their day-to-day operations,” says Doug Piper, VP Product Strategy at Vision Solutions. “We are pleased to collaborate with Midrange Dynamics to bring the assurance that MDRapid provides to customers and prospects worldwide.”

Work with Your Choice of Leading DDS-to-DDL Conversion Tools

In addition to operational impacts, organizations often are concerned about avoiding vendor lock-in when tackling a major, long-term project. MDCMS and MDRapid integrate seamlessly with industry-leading, comprehensive DDS-to-DDL conversion tools to facilitate roll out of database changes across the enterprise. This gives companies the flexibility to evaluate a variety of capable DDS-to-DDL solutions and choose the one that best fits their modernization approach. The combination of vendor choice, minimal downtime, and risk-free deployment removes a large obstacle for database modernization projects.

MDRapid is packaged as part of MDCMS Version 7.3, and it is licensed separately. Contact an MDCMS representative in your region to learn more about MDRapid and other useful new capabilities and productivity enhancements in the latest version of MDCMS.

About MDCMS

Midrange Dynamics change management incorporates everything needed to modify, install, and distribute software changes across multiple IBM i and multiplatform systems. Its MDOpen plug-in, which has met IBM specifications as Ready for IBM Rational software, can be used with any Eclipse-based development platform, including Rational Developer for i.

MDCMS is inherently flexible in its design; there’s no need to learn a proprietary language to configure it to fit an environment. It includes field-level cross-referencing, and tools for native and cross-platform development are on the same screen. There are no limits on test levels, and users can rollback all or some objects for any environment.

MDCMS also presents a lower total cost of ownership, with savings in time and budget spent on implementation and ongoing management of the product. Easy upgrade to new MDCMS versions means users can take advantage of new functions without needing to reconfigure their environment. In addition, MDCMS includes automated TurnOver migration capability for organizations that wish to move from legacy TurnOver change management software.

Companies around the globe are successfully using MDCMS, MDOpen, and the MDWorkflow Web-based project management system to manage, audit, and distribute updates for third-party software packages and in-house applications. MDCMS is certified Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliant.
