IBM Software Defined Networking for Virtual Environment, OpenFlow Edition, when used with OpenFlow-enabled switches, provides for centralized and simplified programmable networking.

IBM SDN VE OpenFlow Edition is an SDN Controller for OpenFlow networks. IBM SDN VE OpenFlow Edition is part of IBM's Unified Controller architecture, which offers an OpenFlow Controller feature and a network virtualization feature (a separate feature key required) in a unified platform. IBM SDN VE OpenFlow Edition controls an OpenFlow network.

IBM SDN VE OpenFlow Edition provides the following features for an OpenFlow network:

  • OpenFlow network topology discovery and maintenance
  • OpenFlow flow creation for end-station connectivity based on network policies
  • Static flow configuration support
  • Logical Network Partition - Logical L2 and L3 network on top of an OpenFlow network
  • Visualization of physical and logical network topologies
  • Flow replication and redirection - an SDN application for replicating
  • OpenFlow flows and redirecting them to a specified end station
  • OpenStack integration via Neutron plug-in
  • Active-active high availability - up to four instances in a cluster
  • Support for both virtual and physical OpenFlow switches
  • Multicast support using IGMP v2/v3
  • Network policies based on up to L4 packet fields; these policies allow drop type ACL rules and can be applied between logical network entities
  • Proactive flow management for low latency OpenFlow configurations
  • Unified Management Console for OpenFlow networks and network virtualization (IBM SDN VE VMware Edition and IBM SDN VE KVM Edition purchased separately)
  • Multiple Hypervisor (VMware, Linux™ KVM) support for network virtualization from same console (IBM SDN VE VMware Edition and IBM SDN VE KVM Edition purchased separately)
  • Unified Northbound RESTful API for OpenFlow networks and network virtualization (IBM SDN VE VMware Edition and/or IBM SDN VE KVM Edition purchased separately)
  • LDAP based authentication
  • RADIUS based authentication
  • SPARTA based flow creation and maintenance
  • GUI for easy and intuitive operation
  • CLI support
  • Per-tenant self provisioning
