Flywheel Backups Replace Batteries in Data Center

VYCON, the designer and manufacturer of environmentally-friendly, high-speed energy storage flywheel systems, has announced that it is working with Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in its commitment to going green.  The healthcare provider is replacing the lead acid batteries used for backup power in its data centers with VYCON's VDC flywheel backup system. The VYCON flywheel UPS system has been in operation since April with excellent results, the firm reports.

Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota is taking a leadership role by replacing its hospitals' traditional battery backup system with an environmentally-safe flywheel system. The flywheel does not contain any chemicals and does not present a disposal hazard. Moreover, the VYCON flywheel backup system takes up significantly less space than battery solutions.

"We're very excited to be a part Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota green initiatives. The flywheel UPS is superior to batteries in that it is a highly reliable protection system in the event of a power failure, and it does not contain any toxic elements," says VYCON's chief marketing officer, Frank DeLattre.  "VYCON's VDC provides peace-of-mind for power backup in an emergency."

VYCON's innovative VDC backup systems are environmentally-friendly high-speed flywheels that provide clean ride-through backup power that is fast, predictable, and seamless, the company says. The VDC units can replace traditional UPS batteries or work in tandem with batteries to provide instantaneous on-demand power. Hospitals across the nation are depending on VYCON's innovative flywheel systems to assure clean power continuity, the company said.
