Editor's Note: With downloads of the new Firefox 3 browser claimed at 8,290,545 between 11:16 a.m. PDT on June 17th and 11:16 a.m. PDT on June 18th, Mozilla team members are expressing confidence the browser set a high mark to beat on "Download Day" for total number of software downloads in a single day. While the group waits for official confirmation from Guinness World Records, its fans have organized more than 700 parties around the globe to celebrate.
Since the world record category is one Mozilla hopes to establish with Guinness, there is no previous world record to beat. Exceeding eight million downloads in a single day, however, certainly is an accomplishment, particularly since Mozilla had earlier said it was expecting to achieve Firefox 2's 1.6 million downloads during the first day. Firefox 3 downloads exceeded the 1.6 million figure during the first five hours as users cruised along at 9,000 downloads per minute following an inauspicious start when the Mozilla servers hiccupped before eventually starting to process requests.
Meanwhile, Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer crew reportedly delivered a large frosted cake to the Mozilla team at their office upon release of Firefox 3, is planning on releasing a second beta in August of Internet Explorer 8.
Mozilla has released Firefox 3, a major update to its popular and acclaimed free, open source Web browser. Firefox 3 is the culmination of three years of efforts from thousands of developers, security experts, localization and support communities, and testers from around the globe.

Security. Firefox 3 raises the bar for security. The new malware and phishing protection helps protect from viruses, worms, trojans and spyware to keep people safe on the Web.
