Both perceived cost and complexity continue to thwart adoption of DR solutions, survey finds.
United Computer Group has released results of an IBM Power Systems disaster recovery survey completed this past spring that focused on the needs of IBM iSeries end user clients and their opinions relating to disaster recovery recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO) preferences.
Jim Kandrac, United Computer Group president, says, "The results indicate that end user companies continue to be sensitive to both the costs and complexities of backup and DR solutions in the market today. The most significant factor was to select a solution that is easy to implement and test regularly," says Kandrac. "In addition, and surprisingly—only 11 percent of companies felt they were 100 percent prepared for a disaster, and 44 percent of companies desired an RTO of less than 24 hours," Kandrac reports. Thirty percent of survey respondents were UCG clients, and 70 percent had no prior business relationship.
Thomas Davidson, managing partner of Rippe & Kingston, and a survey respondent with seven IBM Power Systems servers, indicated that R&K is "making progress" in its quest for a less-than-24-hour DR. The company relies on "both tape backup and online backup." R&K's main concerns are: "disk failure, tornado, hurricane, and Internet failure." According to Davidson, "R&K cannot afford to lose any data and, taking cost into consideration, is committed to achieving a less than 24-hour RTO of all systems."
