S4i Systems, Inc. has announced that it has entered into an agreement with Centerfield Technology to acquire disk/HUNTER, the advanced spike monitoring solution for IBM Power Systems/System i servers.

Ongoing product support for disk/HUNTER, as well as software enhancements and new product sales, will be managed from now on by S4i, according to Spencer Elliott, S4i's president and CTO.

The plan to acquire disk/HUNTER emerged in December 2007. S4i's management identified a clear symbiotic relationship between the S4i DASD-Plus disk management solution and the capabilities of disk/HUNTER. Prior to this acquisition, S4i and Centerfield had enjoyed a fruitful partnership spanning nearly 10 years.

disk/HUNTER provides disk spike detection, notification services, and automated data collection/analysis capabilities to those who manage IBM Power Systems/System i servers. Armed with detailed, root-cause information, administrators can take immediate corrective action.

S4i DASD-Plus, first offered in 2001, provides diagnostic, cleanup, analytical, and reporting functionality to Power System/System i users. S4i DASD-Plus extends the useful capacity life of disk resources with automatic and continuous disk cleanup and reorganization. It improves machine performance by optimizing over-utilized disks, and lessens clutter for faster backups. S4i DASD-Plus is used by thousands of companies worldwide including Staples, Big Lots, Shell and Stanley Works.

Says Elliott, "We are very excited about what this acquisition means to both our customers and S4i Systems as we fold disk/HUNTER into our family of solutions. We plan to package this disk spike monitoring solution as an extension of S4i DASD-Plus. This new module will be relabeled and marketed as DASD-Plus Alert." Elliott adds that development planning is already underway to provide a seamless integration and new functionality, and he anticipates that DASD-Plus Alert will be available in about eight weeks.

Six weeks ago, S4i announced a new release of S4i DASD-Plus Chart, a product designed to produce vivid graphical representations of disk-use and growth statistics supplied by S4i DASD-Plus. S4i DASD-Plus Chart was the first snap-in solution for S4i DASD-Plus.

The sale of disk/HUNTER puts Centerfield Technology in a better position to execute its own business plan which calls for increased alignment with SQL and DB2 based tools. According to Mark Holm, CTO at Centerfield Technology, "We believe this is a positive development for our loyal disk/HUNTER customers because the product will be in the hands of disk space experts and they will benefit from that expertise. This is also a positive development for Centerfield because it allows us to sharpen our strategic focus on SQL and DB2 tools that improve performance and automate administration."
