OCEAN Technical Conference Convenes June 30 in Irvine, Calif.

The OCEAN User Group of IBM Power Systems/System i5, and iSeries users, based in Southern California, will host its 15th annual day-long "Catch the Wave" iSeries Technical Conference and Vendor Expo June 30 featuring educational tracks for System i5/iSeries application development, e-business Web tools, iSeries security and infrastructure and Microsoft tools. The conference will also include a vendor expo expected to include 32 premiere System i5/iSeries solutions providers, and Business Partners.

The event will be held on Monday, June 30, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 17900 Jamboree Blvd., Irvine, California. The one-day conference runs from 7:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and materials.

Training sessions will be led by Jon Paris and Susan Gantner, Partner400; George Farr, IBM; Joe Pluta, Pluta Brothers Design; Larry Bolhuis, Arbor Solutions and creator of Franken i; Al Grega, IBM; Pat Botz, Group8 Security; Craig Pelkie, Bits & Bytes; Doug Mack, IBM; Sharon Hoffman, System i Network, and Jorge Sanguinetti, Apria.

All are top trainers and experts on the IBM Power System, i5/iSeries platforms and Windows environments. Presentations by these experts generally have been extremely well received in the past by user groups throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Topics to be covered include:

·        RPG IV Advanced Techniques

·        New Power System development tools

·        Power System/iSeries security and infrastructure

There will be sessions that include such topics as:

·        An introduction to Microsoft.Net

·        Extending RPG with PHP, XML

·        Remote System Explorer, SOA, and Web Services

The conference is geared to:

·        RPG programmers and development managers looking for an introduction to the latest application development tools

·        Those who want to bring their skills up to speed with the latest features in RPG IV, including strengthening the understanding and use of WebSphere application development tools like WebFacing and HATS

A special track on security and infrastructure will be geared to operations support and IT management, technical support specialists and systems administrators. There will be sessions geared for programmers, business analysts, and project managers who need to be able to integrate data between the System i5 and Windows environments. There will be an introduction to Java and Java Script, and sessions on HTML, Eclipse, Rational and WDSc.

There will be a two-part luncheon keynote by Jeff Howard, director, IBM Power Systems Offerings who will speak on "Future Direction and Emerging Technologies," and a presentation by George Farr, IBM worldwide PL manager, who will address "Power Systems Tools and Compiler Directions."

The OCEAN Vendor Expo will provide an excellent opportunity for iSeries vendors to meet with developers and managers that have a voice in the selection of software and utilities. There will be some 32 vendor exhibitors making the expo the only event of its kind in Southern California.

There is a fee attached to the OCEAN seminars, but the Vendor Expo is free and open to the public. The conference is expected to draw between 200-300 attendees.

The OrangeCounty Educational Advancement Network, Inc., better known as just OCEAN, is a nonprofit user group and one of the largest and most proactive IBM Power Systems midrange user groups in the western United States with over 400 members. The group's primary mission is to serve as an affordable source of education on the technology its members use.
