VP urges members to attend for update on worldwide initiative to extend and promote the IBM i platform.

The OCEAN user group will feature Jeff Olen and Donald Leong at its final meeting of the year Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Perry Mills, OCEAN vice president of publicity and marketing, is urging all OCEAN members to attend the meeting, which will highlight ways to get involved with the iManifest initiative that is catching on in the U.S. and around the world as part of an effort to publicize the inherent benefits of the IBM i platform.

"I want to take this opportunity to implore you all to attend this meeting, as the future of the best computing platform we have known, and the one that most of our careers hinges on, is up in the air," says Perry. "It behooves us all to have a hand in its continued success, and we can all have that hand if we choose to get involved. iManifest is a movement that could give us that hand, and we can learn about it at this meeting."

Jeff Olen of Olen Business Consulting, Inc., will lead the presentation on iManifest, and Don Leong, and OCEAN member, will present a case study on Web services.

Web Services Real Life Examples

Readers have heard a lot about Web services, but how are companies actually using them? Web services offer the System i many possibilities to be part of the big corporate picture. No longer is the System i humming away in the back-office without being noticed.

If you've heard that it costs too much to start any Web services project because of the huge effort needed to disassemble decades-old programs to get to the business logic, you need to attend this meeting. Donald Leong will be presenting a simple way to extract data from an RPG screen with very minimal alteration to existing programs. Find out how to overcome the hurdle and launch a Web services project. This presentation will focus on how to extract underlying data from existing legacy programs.

The meeting will be held at IBM–FileNet, 3545 Harbor Blvd. HTB Bldg., Carnegie Hall, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. The facility is freeway close, and there is free parking. To help plan enough food and handout materials, users should immediately make reservations at www.ocean400.org.

The organization extended a welcome to Rick Kuhs of IBM who will be assisting Herb Da Silva as IBM Liaison. Rick is a Power Systems specialist and can answer your AIX questions as well as System i. Prior to IBM, Rick had worked for Sun and in an earlier life was an RPG programmer on an IBM System 36.
