Former IBM Employees Aided

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a $4.8 million federal grant to help laid-off Minnesota workers. At least 68 IBM Rochester workers were aided with $247,000 from the state of Minnesota in May and the National Emergency Grant will now cover that earlier cost.

"This funding will provide workers with the education and training needed to upgrade existing skills or learn new skills in order to gain employment in growing regional industries," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Offering workers the opportunity to enter new careers is an important part of revitalizing regional economies and a step toward nationwide economic recovery."

As IBM did not release information on layoffs, the 68 workers are only a reflection on the total number of Rochester layoffs. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

IBM Offers Smarter City Assessment Tool

IBM has announced it is offering a new Smarter City Assessment Tool to help cities better understand and meet the demands of increasing urbanization. IBM defines a smarter city as one that makes optimal use of all interconnected information available today in order to better understand and control its operations and optimize the use of limited resources.

Cities using the tool will provide IBM with specific data about their core operational systems, which are then analyzed to benchmark a city's overall capabilities against peer locations, highlight relative strengths and weaknesses, and provide initial recommendations for improvement. The tool is based on a methodology developed by IBM's Global Location Strategies consulting service, which helps corporations determine the best countries and cities in which to locate businesses.

Additionally, IBM's Institute for Business Value is doing extensive research in cities and has published the first in a series of three studies on smarter cities.
