IBM has announced that SYNNEX and Tech Data Corp. will join Ingram Micro, Inc. in reselling the IBM System Storage N series product line in the United States and Canada. Each of the three companies will recruit and help authorize new resellers for the marketing of IBM System Storage N series products.
"IBM's goal is to provide the leading technologies and solutions at every layer of the data center--storage, servers, software and services--and utilize our strong relationships with our distributors and resellers to accomplish this," said Stephen Grillo, worldwide marketing manager for N series, IBM System Storage. "We're pleased to now have relationships in place with Ingram Micro, SYNNEX, and Tech Data where they can help deliver N series products to small to mid-sized customers to help them solve the most critical data center challenges today."
IBM Business Partners did not appear fazed by the news that there would be additional resellers of storage in the marketplace. Curt Schwinck, president of CLS Enterprises, Oceanside, Calif., an IBM Business Partner and systems integrator, said he already did business with both SYNNEX and Tech Data and utilized their services for supplying a variety of computer products requested regularly by his customers. "This simply gives me more choices among suppliers, and then it's a question of pricing and availability," he said.
Pete Elliot, director of marketing at Key Information Systems, Woodland Hills, Calif., also an IBM Business Partner and systems integrator, agreed the move would have little, if any, effect on Key's business.
"This new move by IBM won't affect Key. These new resellers are selling IBM's N Series storage directly to buyers... it provides a low-end storage solution with a limited migration path. Key sells IBM's higher level storage products that are characterized by scalability, longevity, and a strong ROI. We architect our storage solutions on long-term standards that ensure they will grow with time to continue to provide a workable storage solution as storage requirements change. The IBM announcement will be welcome news to the segment of the market that can use IBM's N Series storage."
