Developed by New Generation Software, NGS-IQ addresses the challenges of business intelligence in a scalable, cost-effective manner by providing iSeries customers with an integrated suite of flexible and powerful modules to handle ad hoc queries, production reporting, Web access, business performance, data integration, and data warehousing. This comprehensive design enables NGS-IQ to satisfy the very different database and reporting needs of senior executives, middle managers, business analysts, power users, and information technology professionals.

Each module of NGS-IQ uses the iSeries platform as the central, secure repository of information, while extending the information out to personal computers and Web-browsing platforms. Microsoft Office users can transparently obtain data quickly and easily from NGS-IQ queries. Business analysts can investigate multi-dimensional representations of the NGS-IQ query or data warehouse through the OLAP client. Managers can depend on NGS-IQ to help them measure enterprise performance through Web-based interactive dashboards. Fixed-function terminal users can use NGS-IQ to develop complex reports directly from their green-screen workstations.

In addition, NGS has developed a comprehensive data mart called Decision Assist that harnesses the power of NGS-IQ to deliver pre-built reports for sales, inventory management, and customer profitability.

The versatility within NGS-IQ allows an organization to create the following:
Ad hoc reports
Data summary extraction files in a variety of file formats
Operational or transactional reports
Full two-tier or three-tier data warehousing systems
Dynamic online analytical processing (OLAP) models
Visual "snapshot" presentations of business performance

NGS provides comprehensive product training, support, and documentation.

NGS-IQ Modules

IQ Server is the central element of NGS-IQ that queries the iSeries database, runs its own powerful parsing algorithms, and outputs the results into a variety of media and formats. The strength of IQ Server is the flexibility it provides to create simple or complex reports or--by using its data extraction and cleansing capabilities--to build elements of a complete data warehouse without a complicated interface and without user knowledge of a sophisticated programming language.

IQ Server supports an extensive array of advanced functions, including conditional calculations on new and existing fields, robust record sorting and selection, prompting, comprehensive record exclusion logic, analytical matrix creation, field aliases, and data dictionary support. It provides all of these functions using a standard SQL or text-based user interface.

The IQ Server engine provides extensive output and formatting capabilities to create files or to directly create reports. Formats include output to DB2 physical files, ASCII files, 5250 display data stream, iSeries printer spool files, drillable HTML, XML, Adobe PDF, email, and FTP. This flexibility allows an organization to support a wide variety of user requirements.

Designed to complement the native security system of iSeries, IQ SeQure protects the NGS-IQ queries and data warehouse from security breaches by providing optimal security, such as at field and record level. It also restricts access to electronic versions of reports generated by IQ Server.

Qport Builder is a graphical user interface to IQ Server that lets users build queries for data extraction, data cleansing, or report generation. It communicates directly with IQ Server without the need for a Windows-based ODBC protocol driver. It runs either as a Windows application or as a Java applet inside an Internet browser.

Qport Access lets Windows users run queries that were developed using IQ Server or Qport Builder and quickly have the data loaded into a spreadsheet or other Office document without experiencing the complexity of file-transfer programs. Users can enter ad hoc calculation and record selection criteria and direct the output of these data extraction or queries to Microsoft Word, Excel, or Access; Lotus 1-2-3; the SmartView OLAP module; a Windows display; a local PC or iSeries printer; an iSeries DB2 database file; or an ASCII file. Qport Access automatically launches Windows applications, making the user's exposure to DB2 and the iSeries as transparent as possible.

Qport Access allows Excel users to send data to specific workbooks, sheets, and named ranges; save all formatting changes; and append or replace the data in a range when the query is re-run. Calculations based on formulas outside the range are automatically updated each time the query is run.

Qport Access also allows authorized users to upload MS Access MDB files to the iSeries so that reference tables or external data can become an integrated part of a query or the iSeries data warehousing system.

SmartView is the online analytic processing (OLAP) client module that presents data extracted by IQ Server in a graphical, read-only format. Selected data is sent directly to the client PC running SmartView. Offline, the user can pivot and reformat data; filter records; drill down and up through multiple levels of rows, columns, or detail records; highlight data using Boolean logic; and graph or chart the results in a variety of different formats. The resulting 2-D and 3-D charts and graphs can be printed or exported to Microsoft Office applications.

The NGS Business Performance Dashboard is a complete dashboard development and deployment solution that gives users the ability to view and interact with live business data in a graphical format through a Web browser. Dashboard elements can include charts, tables, gauges, maps, and other visualization tools. NGS-IQ passes data into these dashboards from Microsoft Excel and XML files. Updates to the dashboards can be scheduled from the iSeries or Windows server. Any authorized user equipped with a Web browser and the royalty-free Macromedia Flash Player software can display and use these dashboards.

The NGS Business Performance Dashboard comes with a starter kit of dashboards designed for finance, human resources, sales, and marketing. Customization is easily performed by a business analyst with Microsoft Excel 2003 skills.

Decision Assist is a ready-to-use business intelligence starter kit consisting of a pre-configured DB2 data mart and analytical reporting environment addressing sales, customer profitability, and inventory management. Customers can use NGS-IQ to customize Decision Assist's extraction and transformation routines to work with any iSeries ERP environment. The Decision Assist reports are designed for use with the Microsoft Office desktop and Web browsing applications.

In conclusion, the modularity of the NGS-IQ suite leverages and builds upon the company's investment in iSeries, reinforcing the power of the centralized, secure DB2 database. Information is delivered into the hands of the users quickly, easily, and without programming. NGS-IQ enhances the value of the iSeries and business-critical iSeries applications.
