Someday, if (or when) you have a DASD failure on your AS/400, this handy little listing may possibly help you. Go into system service tools, STRSST, and print a copy of your disk configuration. (The user profile will have to have special authority (SPCAUT) of *SERVICE to execute the STRSST command.)

The first entry on the disk configuration screen will be the DASD that contains the operating system. Note that it has an ASP defined - this is where the operation system resides.

Disk errors on drives other than the system drive may be correctable by deleting/restoring objects, reallocating sectors, and so on. You may even be able to allow some users to stay on the system while you work on the problem. However, if you have an error on the system drive, your system will probably not be running.

Using the screen print of the disk configuration, reference codes, error logs and any other hints you can find, you can quickly determine which drive is failing.

Another hint that might come in handy sometime: the AS/400 will run with just the operating system DASD powered on.
