Vision Solutions, a leading high availability (HA) solution provider in the IBM System i market, has announced the release of ORION 2.1. This upgrade includes performance and automation enhancements that add speed and robust replication-environment controls to role-swap and other critical HA functions, the company say.

Targeted at the enterprise market, Orion 2.1 has completed beta testing and is now installed at select customers in advance of the general availability (GA) date currently set for May 4.

"ORION HA 2.1 adds tremendous enhancements to HA performance, flexibility, and ease of use," says Vision Solutions Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President Alan Arnold. "This release represents the most significant improvement to operations, monitoring functions, and the HA management interface since the product's introduction. The ground-breaking features in ORION 2.1 emphasize our commitment to continue to enhance and support this powerful and popular HA product with the technology breakthroughs that result from the merged Vision and iTera companies."

"In the four months since the merger of Vision Solutions and iTera, our combined research and development teams have blended remarkably well, and this latest release of ORION is part of this success," Arnold continues. "The cross pollination and collaboration of our teams recently resulted in Vision adding a host of new features to both our iTera HA and ORION products. Our customers will continue to reap the benefits as we plan to move both of these exceptional HA products to a converged architecture."

"ORION 2.1 demonstrates Vision Solution's commitment to its diverse customer set," adds Executive Vice President Dan NeVille. "An impressive stream of new innovations are continuously being incorporated into both of our HA offerings so that we continue to deliver and support the best HA solution for all of our customers disparate data protection and recovery needs."

Some of the major new features and benefits of ORION 2.1 include:

  • New "Role Swap Supervisor" and push-button role swap capabilitiesùit is easier than ever to execute and control the role swap process.
A new, customizable, automated, procedure-based role swap facility, called Role Swap Supervisor in ORION 2.1 lets companies precisely define their role swap processes. ORION customers like Julia Nelson at Railcar Management Inc. sought a feature further automating role swaps to make the process bullet-proof for her company's 24x7 tech support staff.. Julia participated in the ORION v2.1 beta program and says, "Based on my experience, anyone looking to simplify role swaps and make them more robust will be able to do that with the ORION Role Swap Supervisor."
  • New procedure automation featuresùHA operators enjoy increased flexibility and speed for managing their HA environments.
ORION's Navigator GUI interface has been completely redesigned to provide simplified views into key replication and role swap functions while adding extensive drill-down capabilities that optimize daily operations and HA environment monitoring. In addition, built-in alerts notify operations staff when attention is required.
  • Advanced performance accelerators take exceptional HA performance and move it to an even higher level.
A number of significant performance enhancements are included in the latest release of ORION that further increase the efficiency of the product's powerful replication, auditing, monitoring, and role-swap processes. Vision has always been known for their industry leading performance and this raises the bar again as the leaders in System I HA industry.

In addition to the above, there are many other enhancements to the Vision Solutions ORION HA solution in release 2.1 that add flexibility and ease of use to this widely installed HA product.
