New Replacador makes deduplication with replication affordable for the SMB.
Until now, many SMB’s have been left out in the cold when it comes to protecting their data using deduplication and replication due to the stiff price tag of most systems. Enter Replacador, LaserVault’s new replication solution that works with the built-in deduplication component of Windows 2012.
Brad Jensen, LaserVault’s CEO, explains: “Deduplication with replication is an important component of an effective data backup plan. We created Replacador at the urging of our customers who were looking for a cost-effective backup solution that included deduplication and replication. Microsoft Windows 2012 includes deduplication, but what it does not include is replication of compressed files. Replacador runs the Windows Deduplication job and then replicates the changes across the Internet, a local area network, or to an external drive. With the addition of replication, Windows Deduplication can offer the SMB a backup deduplication solution at a much lower price than a dedicated appliance.”
He adds, “The keys for the SMB are the low cost of entry and low cost of maintenance compared with most other deduplication/replication solutions available today. Because Replacador provides the replication function for Windows deduplicated volumes it becomes possible to use a standard Windows Server as software-defined storage for backups keeping costs to a minimum. SDS allows them to use off-the-shelf servers combined with special storage management software for their backups providing additional savings.”
For businesses wanting a complete backup system, Replacador works with both of LaserVault’s tapeless backup solutions for the IBM i: the Universal Backup Device (UBD) and LaserVault Backup (LVB). By combining UBD or LVB with Replacador, the user gets the many benefits of tapeless backup along with the added protection of deduplication and replication.
What deduplication makes possible is it allows the user to store up to fifty full backups in the area normally required for two or three backups, saving on storage space. Deduplication makes it feasible to keep many backup cycles online and therefore easily available. They can be Windows backups, Linux backups, or IBM i backups. Deduplication reduces the size of each new backup cycle's data footprint to a fraction of the amount taken up by a complete backup. Full backups can be completed each day providing the maximum protection for files.
To fully protect data there needs to be multiple copies in multiple locations. Replication makes it feasible to copy backups over the Internet to a safe location. The backups can be replicated to an external disk drive, or to the cloud. Replication moves just the changes to the offsite disaster recovery copy. Replacador makes it possible to replicate across a network, the internet, or to an external drive.
With Replacador, SMBs can affordably and automatically create deduplicated and replicated copies of backups while saving storage space. With the ever lowering price of external drives, it is easy to add a second or third local or remote copy of an entire backup set.
“Although deduplication can be used with live data, where it really shines is in the storage of backup files. Deduplication is great for backups because you get very high deduplication ratios, and you can replicate the backup by sending only the changes across the network or internet,” says Rick Wilson, VP of Sales and Software Development.
