The SafeTape hardware units are designed to encrypt / decrypt data on the fly. The units utilize the unique 3DES2 data encryption, where the data is split into two streams and each stream is encrypted separately using user unique encryption blocks. After encryption, two streams of data are merged before the data is written to tape. The encryption process operates in real time with no impact on the drive speed or performance
