<p>Brothers Emil and Henry Stanz started a foodservice business in 1923 with just $500, a small truck, and big plans. Today, Stanz Foodservice serves 3,500 institutions in Indiana and Michigan, including the University of Notre Dame. <br /><br />The foodservice industry is competitive; most vendors sell similar merchandise at a low profit margin. Because of this, Stanz is always looking for new ways to offer its clients more value by improving responsiveness, facilitating consultative selling, and reducing the cost of business. The technology-centered solutions used by Stanz-particularly its advanced Retalix ERP system that runs on an iSeries Model 810-contribute greatly to these endeavors.</p>

<p>Whatever else they do, all organizations are in the business of managing information. That information comes in various forms, including structured data (such as names and numbers in a database) and unstructured data (such as documents, presentations, videos, drawings, and graphs). Organizations have extensive experience in maintaining structured data, but managing and securing unstructured data while making it easily accessible to-and, more importantly, findable by the people who need it can be a challenge. <a href="http://www.acom.com/">ACOM's</a> <a href="http://www.acom.com/content_management/">EZContentManager</a> helps meet that challenge. It's sold as a standalone product or as an add-on to ACOM's <a href="http://acom.com/iseries/ezpm400.html">EZPayManager/400</a> payment management application or its <a href="http://acom.com/iseries/ezedoc400.html">EZeDocs/400</a> document output management software.</p>

<p>When the time comes to replace green-screens or even older PCs that have reached the end of their useful lives, an increasing number of organizations are turning to thin clients as a low-cost, versatile alternative. In January of this year, Arizona-based BOSaNOVA, a leader in thin clients and network appliances for the iSeries market, announced the addition of <a href="http://www.gorabbit.net/">the Rabbit</a> to its thin client line. The headline of an ad that BOSaNOVA is running for the Rabbit offers a hint as to the derivation of the product's name by suggesting that the tortoise wins only in fairytales.</p>

<p>There is a large functionality and price gap between the low-end, single-purpose accounting packages used by the smallest of companies and the high-end, full-featured ERP suites used by the largest of enterprises. Software Concepts Inc. of North Billerica, Massachusetts, fills that gap with DS90. Fittingly, the company refers to DS90 as "the ERP for small business."</p>
<p>For the most part, DS90 is used by wholesalers, distributors, and manufacturers and has been deployed since 1991. Currently, the majority of Software Concepts' DS90 clients are in the northeast United States, but the company just started establishing distributors across the country.</p>

<p>New technologies can offer organizations the opportunity to improve productivity and/or reap the reward of new revenue streams. Nonetheless, their introduction can be expensive and disruptive. One major contributing factor to this cost and disruption is the need to hire new employees or train existing staff to acquire the required skills. Organizations with existing iSeries development skills can avoid some of these costs when building new Web-enabled, .NET-based systems by using ASNA Visual RPG (AVR) for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET to give their developers the ability to develop .NET-compliant programs using RPG syntax.</p>

<p>Terminal emulation is one of those specialized areas that harken back to the days of the hardwired terminals, like the 5250 units that IBM sold as display stations. Customers wanted cheaper, more functional workstations, and vendors responded with equipment and/or software specifically designed to bridge the gap between IBM's technical requirements and the customer's desires for functionality. Terminal emulation, as a technology, is one device <em>pretending</em> to be something different: a translator of one computer datastream into another.</p>

<p>If you ask iSeries professionals to name Web development and deployment software that starts with "Web," WebSmart is usually not the first name that comes to mind, which is surprising because <a href="http://www.bcdsoftware.com">Business Computer Design (BCD)</a>, WebSmart's vendor, has a major presence in the iSeries market. <p>PowerLock AuthorityBroker is a new, easy-to-use solution that works with OS/400 and i5/OS security to protect and audit access to sensitive corporate assets. Organizations in every industry and country are now impacted by one or more security or privacy regulations. Legislation like Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, GLBA, and the California Privacy Act has emboldened auditors, making IT audits more rigorous and tougher to pass. Whether it is root access on UNIX or special authorities on OS/400, auditors consistently rate the overuse of powerful user profiles as one of the top exception items.</p>

  • SB Profound WC 5536 Have you been wondering about Node.js? Our free Node.js Webinar Series takes you from total beginner to creating a fully-functional IBM i Node.js business application. You can find Part 1 here. In Part 2 of our free Node.js Webinar Series, Brian May teaches you the different tooling options available for writing code, debugging, and using Git for version control. Brian will briefly discuss the different tools available, and demonstrate his preferred setup for Node development on IBM i or any platform. Attend this webinar to learn:

  • SB Profound WP 5539More than ever, there is a demand for IT to deliver innovation. Your IBM i has been an essential part of your business operations for years. However, your organization may struggle to maintain the current system and implement new projects. The thousands of customers we've worked with and surveyed state that expectations regarding the digital footprint and vision of the company are not aligned with the current IT environment.

  • SB HelpSystems ROBOT Generic IBM announced the E1080 servers using the latest Power10 processor in September 2021. The most powerful processor from IBM to date, Power10 is designed to handle the demands of doing business in today’s high-tech atmosphere, including running cloud applications, supporting big data, and managing AI workloads. But what does Power10 mean for your data center? In this recorded webinar, IBMers Dan Sundt and Dylan Boday join IBM Power Champion Tom Huntington for a discussion on why Power10 technology is the right strategic investment if you run IBM i, AIX, or Linux. In this action-packed hour, Tom will share trends from the IBM i and AIX user communities while Dan and Dylan dive into the tech specs for key hardware, including:

  • Magic MarkTRY the one package that solves all your document design and printing challenges on all your platforms. Produce bar code labels, electronic forms, ad hoc reports, and RFID tags – without programming! MarkMagic is the only document design and print solution that combines report writing, WYSIWYG label and forms design, and conditional printing in one integrated product. Make sure your data survives when catastrophe hits. Request your trial now!  Request Now.

  • SB HelpSystems ROBOT GenericForms of ransomware has been around for over 30 years, and with more and more organizations suffering attacks each year, it continues to endure. What has made ransomware such a durable threat and what is the best way to combat it? In order to prevent ransomware, organizations must first understand how it works.

  • SB HelpSystems ROBOT GenericIT security is a top priority for businesses around the world, but most IBM i pros don’t know where to begin—and most cybersecurity experts don’t know IBM i. In this session, Robin Tatam explores the business impact of lax IBM i security, the top vulnerabilities putting IBM i at risk, and the steps you can take to protect your organization. If you’re looking to avoid unexpected downtime or corrupted data, you don’t want to miss this session.

  • SB HelpSystems ROBOT GenericCan you trust all of your users all of the time? A typical end user receives 16 malicious emails each month, but only 17 percent of these phishing campaigns are reported to IT. Once an attack is underway, most organizations won’t discover the breach until six months later. A staggering amount of damage can occur in that time. Despite these risks, 93 percent of organizations are leaving their IBM i systems vulnerable to cybercrime. In this on-demand webinar, IBM i security experts Robin Tatam and Sandi Moore will reveal:

  • FORTRA Disaster protection is vital to every business. Yet, it often consists of patched together procedures that are prone to error. From automatic backups to data encryption to media management, Robot automates the routine (yet often complex) tasks of iSeries backup and recovery, saving you time and money and making the process safer and more reliable. Automate your backups with the Robot Backup and Recovery Solution. Key features include:
