Q: We are planning to get a new RISC AS/400 in 1996. It is my understanding that, when moving programs from a CISC AS/400 to a RISC AS/400, program conversion will be automatic so recompiles of each program will not be necessary. Do you need the program source for the conversion to take place?
A: No source is needed for the conversion, but the programs do have to have object observability. Conversion can be at restore time or when the object is first accessed, depending on the setting of a new system value. There is a delay in restoring objects when the conversion is done at restore time, but it's a one-time cost. If you specify that objects be converted upon first access, there will be a one-time delay while the object is converted. After that, there will be no more delays when the object is accessed.
