Devon IT at a recent show displayed its new TC10 desktop access device as part of the IBM HC10 workstation blade solution. The new solution is applicable to a wide range of centralized enterprise desktop applications from single monitor systems for mainstream knowledge workers to multi-monitor systems for high-end power users.

This new blade-based solution from IBM and Devon IT will be ideal for traders in financial services who find themselves traditionally surrounded by several workstations generating heat and noise. By moving desktop and applications to blade servers designed to more efficiently dissipate heat, and utilizing a desktop device with no spinning hard drives for storage, or fans needed to dissipate heat, the energy consumed desk-side can be reduced by up to 90 percent, the companies say.

"Prior to the desktop PC boom 25 years ago, desktop client computing was hosted by networks of connected servers. By the 1990s, PCs became connected and played a driving force in server and networking advancements," said Doug Balog, vice president, IBM. "Today, new advances in servers and networking is helping to enable efficient hosting of complex client environments on servers allowing centralized management and security under the control of the data center. With its highly efficient design, IBM BladeCenter has arrived as the ideal platform for server-hosted client computing."

"IBM is clearly the leader in blade computing technologies, and this technology offers unique, breakthrough, and leading-edge remote display and graphics acceleration," noted Joe Makoid, president of Devon IT. "Our partnership with IBM has enabled us to offer a solution with a true workstation experience with rich graphics. This enables the new workstation blade solution from IBM and Devon IT to drastically improve the quality of image delivered at a remote desktop as well as the performance and speed of the process."

The TC10 is the highest performance desktop access device in the world. It is the first desktop access device that gives the user a true PC experience with instant screen updates, full multimedia support, and full USB compatibility. It connects to IBM's HC10 workstation blade using PC over IP (PCoIP) from Teradici Corporation, a technology that changes the desktop computing model by enabling desktop consolidation benefits to be realized across the enterprise. Unlike a traditional RDP thin client, the TC10 is for demanding users that require real time PC-like capability such as financial traders and power users such as CAD engineers.
