New PHP hosting service offers consolidated developer analytics, highly affordable cloud SSL.
The Pagoda Box Cloud platform as a service (PaaS) was released to GA at ZendCon this week offering a newly upgraded multi-node, multi-tenant scalable infrastructure.
Pagoda Box provides incrementally scalable, redundant PHP cloud hosting. Features include Web application, multiple database support, SSL, storage, logs, and analytics. The services are ordered, controlled, and managed through both a command line client, and a web dashboard.
“We aim to put developers at the center of the online universe,” says Pagoda's Scott Anderson, the company's community ambassador. “Our new infrastructure and dashboard deliver the hosting workflow that does just that.”
Pagoda Box starts by automating a scalable cloud environment, fronted by a highly concurrent Erlang routing layer. This infrastructure is core to Pagoda Box’s differentiating features: Instant scalability across components--like Web, caching, writable storage, and databases--plus deep component analytics and granular pricing derived from a robust underlying architecture. Everything is packaged simply through command-line client and intuitive dashboard controls. Everything is packaged simply through command-line client and intuitive dashboard controls. Write collaborative code and commit your changes via git. Deploy with a simple "Pagoda Deploy" command when you’re ready to see code live.
Every application starts with one free instance to aid rapid development. As an added incentive to try the Pagoda Box service, no credit card is required until the developer needs to scale past the free instance. The infrastructure also allows for extremely competitive pricing on cloud SSL for those who need a custom domain.
Pagoda Box consolidates all of a site’s component controls into one custom interface. The hosting company provides built-in, real-time analytics to monitor and control application components from a single page, rather than relying on third-party service providers. It’s a simple control room that puts the developer precisely in the driver’s seat.
Pagoda Box has built a very feature-rich platform with no outside funding—a rarity in the tech startup world. (That is not to say that there have not been offers from notable players.) “We felt we couldn’t compromise the infrastructure to meet business objectives,” says Anderson. “We wanted to provide the best tools for developers.”
However, as Pagoda Box leaves its four-month beta, the platform is set for rapid roll-out of additional features, and the founders are entertaining a first round of investment.
Meanwhile, says Anderson, there are actually two versions of Pagoda Box running side by side—pagodabox.com and newpagodabox.com. Pagodabox.com is running on the old infrastructure while newpagodabox.com is running on the new infrastructure (hence the name). The condition is only temporary, Anderson says, and on Nov. 1, the old infrastructure will be shut down, and newpagodabox.com will then become pagodabox.com. Current users during the beta period will have to move their apps, and there are instructions on the website how to do this, he says.
